Some Wyoming Road Humor
First off, I would like to acknowledge the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and the fine people of Wyoming. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is located in Kemmer, Wyoming and has a satellite Sheriff's Office in Afton, Wyoming. They are a very professional Sheriff's Office and are very cooperative with their neighboring Sheriff's Offices in Bear Lake, Idaho, Caribou County Idaho and Bonniville County Sheriff's Office's.
Now the Funny part
On May 4th, and 5th, 2007, I was called to investigate a shooting incident in Freedom, Idaho which borders Freedom, Wyoming. I also involved the local Idaho Fish and Game Officer named Brandon since the incident involved the possible shooting of a Canadian Goose.
The first day Brandon and I traveled in different vehicles he in his patrol unit and me in mine and I had our female deputy with me. We got a late start and had to return before completing the investigation on May 4th.
On May 5th, Brandon and I returned back to the Wyoming border to further conduct our investigation, he rode with me this time. When we got there we had lunch near where we had to find the address of some of the involved people in Alpine, Wyoming. Brandon and I had never worked with one another and so it was a get acquainted time as well. After finishing lunch, the laughter began between us. I noticed in this restaurant there were many many bird houses hanging from chains. When we paid for our lunch, I asked the waitress if the bird houses were for sale? She replied no this is the largest collection of bird houses in the State of Wyoming. It was intriguing however.
As Brandon and I exited the cafe I remarked I guess it is nice to be famous for something and that began the laughter between us.
Little did we know things were about to get way more funny as time passed!!!
We drove back toward the little town of Etna, and the Wyoming dispatcher had given me some directions before I left my office in Soda Springs, Idaho. We always communicate with each others Offices because we border one another.
I wrote down the directions and had told Brandon previously the road was suppose to be between Etna and Alpine and went west from the main highway between the two towns.
As we drove south on the highway we saw county road 108, we assumed 107 and 106 were to follow, WRONG!
We then encountered county road 111, so we turned around and returned back toward 108 thinking 106 must be the other side of 108, Wrong again!
As we passed county road 108, Brandon said there it is!
I said where, I didn't see it. He said you won't believe this but it is directly across from county road 108 but it goes east not west.
I pulled out my written directions and sure enough I wrote down it went west not east, so now I was totally confused.
We turned around again and got onto 106, it went about 30 feet and turned into Stewart road with no warning and instead of going east it went north, we followed it and it came to a dead end with a no trespassing sign, no road of Spur Loop was seen! Brandon and I were both confused. I told him I mentioned to the Wyoming dispatcher before leaving my office I had told her their roads were screwed up and she asked me do you really think so? I replied to her oh yes I've been over there before trying to find someone and the roads don't make sense. I relayed that to Brandon and we both laughed.
So I call the Wyoming dispatcher and tell her this is Gary from Caribou County she recognized my voice, and said hello Gary. I told her we were confused and tried to tease her about my prior comment earlier that morning about their roads being a mess, she didn't see any humor and Brandon began to laugh because she wasn't seeing the humor, I tried to keep composed on the cell phone with her.
I told her 106 went initially east not west, she had no comment, I told her then it ended without warning. She stated well it turns into Stewart road, and if I followed Stewart road it would take me to Spur Loop, I thanked her and we once again drove up Stewart road and Spur Loop remained a mystery.
Next step
We waived down a man and his wife in a pickup and I told him I was looking for Spur Loop, he said he lives right there and never heard of it but he told me to drive back the way I came and locate two rocks on the left side of the road and turn between them into a sub division and perhaps it was there.
We did as told.
We drove up into this subdivision and the next two roads we came to on the left were both named the same thing. We drove down another street and found county road 414 almost straight across the valley from 106, we were really confused then, and we both were laughing big time, we couldn't contain ourselves. I know Brandon thought I was crazy laughing so much, but he was laughing as hard as me and of course if you know me I had many comments about how much to drink the guys hanging the signs must have had because it was totally screwed up.
Next we take the road with the same name and I come across a Wyoming Highway Patrol vehicle parked at a house and so I stopped hoping he or she could give me directions.
No one was home but a dog who barked when I would ring the bell. I told Brandon with the signs the way they were the trooper probably went to town and couldn't find where his house or patrol car was now! Too funny.
Next we drove around that circle and I waved down another guy and at first I wasn't sure he could speak English but he did and was very nice and he said he wasn't familiar with the area but he was visiting his friend. I asked him if he actually found the friend yet or if he was lost too, he laughed and said let me call my friend and let you talk to him perhaps he can help you. The friend got on the phone and talked to me but had never heard of Spur Loop either. He suggested I drive back between the rocks and turn right onto Stewart and go to the next subdivision to the north and check it. While I was talking to the guy the driver of the vehicle I was talking to waved down a woman and she came to my patrol car window and began talking to me as I hung up with the guy on the phone.
She was very nice but very loud, almost yelling at me and she said she didn't know where Spur Loop was but maybe I could try the subdivision to the north as well as the guy on the phone suggested.
Brandon as we drove away said do you think she couldn't hear, she was screaming at you, I laughed and said well I don't hear very well so I appreciated her talking loud, we began to laugh again, he muttered something about this was unbelievable as I had mentioned as well.
Well we return back to Stewart road and found Gallup road going east, then we found Gallup road going east at the next intersection as well, It appeared they named lots of their roads the same in all their subdivisions. I told Brandon, well lets take this second Gallup road and see what happens, wow the next street was Spur Loop, we actually found it.
Note the experience of driving from the cafe six miles to the Subdivision took 1.5 hours to find this silly street.
I guess trying to find locations in the Etna, Wyoming area one can't get there from here!
